Programmable logic controllers (PLCs) are an established technology that is widely used in industry but poorly understood among software engineers. The talk gives an overview of the state of the practice, explains why such an old technology persists, and gives a critical analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the dominant programming styles and execution semantics of PLCs.
